BTR6 Session 11 - Advancing Open Science (Special Session)

This session will include three presentations on open science efforts in transportation analysis. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion on the use, challenges, and value of open science. An overview of the efforts by the Zephyr Foundation to promote open science in transportation analysis will be provided by moderator, Andre Carrel. The session will take place during the Bridging Transportation Researchers (BTR) Conference held online on August 7 & 8.

Presenters bio

Lisa Zorn is the Assistant Director in Planning for Forecasting, Modeling, and Surveys at the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. She has more than a decade of experience in transportation planning and modeling. She holds a dual MCP/MS in City & Regional Planning and Transportation Engineering from the University of California Berkeley and a BSc in Computer Science from Brown University. She currently serves on the board of the Zephyr Foundation.

Billy Charlton is a software engineer at the Berlin Institute of Technology and a freelance software developer. He has two decades of experience in transportation planning and modeling. He received his PhD in Transport Telematics and Transportation Planning from the Technische Universität Berlin and holds an MSc (Northwestern University) and BSc (Cornell University) in Civil Engineering. He previously served on the board of the Zephyr Foundation.

Jack Greenlee is a researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). He holds a BA in Psychology & Cognitive Studies in Philosophy from the University of Cincinatti. He works on developing and maintaining opensource tools for travel behavior evaluation, data visualization, and data analysis, with a strong focus on user experience (UX).</p>

JP Helveston is a researcher, engineer, choice modeler, developer, musician, swing dancer, and an Assistant Professor at George Washington University in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering. He has consistently made his code, data, and papers openly available on his research website: https://www.jhelvy.com/research

Brice Nichols is a Senior Modeler at the Puget Sound Regional Council. He has a decade of experience in transportation planning and modeling. He holds an MS in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a BSc in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University.

Andrew Rohne is a Senior Consultant at RSG. Prior to joining RSG, Andrew was the transportation modeling manager at the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments where he directed all travel modeling data collection, analysis, application, and development. Andrew received his BUP Urban Planning from the University of Cincinnati and MSc in Civil Engineering from the University of South Florida.
