Session Overview

This session will feature insights from a leading researcher who will demonstrate practical GMNS assignment workflow from roadway-network conversion, demand preparation, and equilibrium assignment to validation and scenario comparison.

GMNS enables seamless integration of tools, datasets, and workflows in travel demand modeling, while also supporting collaboration across disciplines. It provides a uniform, open, and extensible format for sharing routable network data that is both human-readable and machine-readable. Speakers

Dr. Xuesong Zhou

Dr. Xuesong (Simon) Zhou is a Professor of Transportation Systems at Arizona State University and Director of the ASU Transportation+AI Laboratory. He leads the development of open-source transportation modeling tools, including DTALite, NeXTA, and OSM2GMNS.

Ashkan Gholamialam

Ashkan is a transportation modeling professional with experience in regional and corridor-level travel demand modeling including development, calibration, and validation of large-scale travel models using tools such as Cube, VISUM, TransCAD and Dynameq. Ashkan is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in multiple states and a certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE).

Guy Rousseau

Guy Rousseau is the Transportation Models & Travel Surveys Manager for the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), the MPO for Atlanta, Georgia, which he joined in 1998. He is responsible for model development activities and travel surveys. Before coming to ARC, he was the Principal Traffic Engineer for the City of Atlanta Department of Public Works, with responsibilities for travel modeling and traffic simulation. Mr. Rousseau has also been a transportation modeler for the MPOs in Dayton, Ohio, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, and for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

Mohammad Abbasi

Mohammad Abbasi is a doctoral researcher at Arizona State University specializing in scalable transportation modeling and data analysis.

Dave Schmitt

David Schmitt is an expert in transportation planning and demand modeling with a career spanning over 30 years. He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Statistics and Mathematics as well as a Master’s in Planning, all from Florida State University. David currently co-owns and serves as the Executive Vice-President at Insight Transportation Consulting, a firm he helped start in 2021. David leads the company’s nationwide practice in travel demand and analytical modeling. He is a certified member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and actively participates in several key professional organizations.
